So I was reading an article by Thad Madden, EA and he brings up the idea of mandatory withholding being included in any federal legislation.

Instead of the athlete receiving the full amount and dealing with taxes later, a portion is automatically pulled out at the moment of payment. That withheld amount becomes a credit toward the athlete’s eventual tax bill. The same way a traditional paycheck works.

Most NIL payments come with no withholding. Athletes get the full amount upfront, and the tax responsibility shows up months later. For many, that’s their “Welcome to the league” moment.

Would withholding give student athletes a little more breathing room? A little more predictability? It’s interesting to think about how something so simple mechanism could ease the learning curve.

I really like this concept.

However, it raises a bigger question: as NIL grows, shouldn’t the system evolve with it?

Payments, education, compliance, they all move together. Withholding might be one of those small tweaks that creates more stability without changing the spirit of NIL.

As NIL continues to evolve, this feels like a concept worth thinking about.
