When you enter the portal, UNDERSTAND that your current contract with your current school MATTERS!! Read the contract!
Before entering the portal, athletes need to understand: your current contracts still matters.
You need clarity on:
- Scholarship terms and what happens if you ENTER the portal (not just leave, there’s a difference)
- NIL obligations that may continue after transferring
- Termination rights and whether you can exit cleanly (is there a FEE associated with me leaving)
- Academic and eligibility requirements that follow you to your next school
Schools are generally NOT happy when their athlete hits the portal, so they tend not to do the athlete any favors and they do not make it easy to leave. A big negotiation point is “termination clauses” or “buyout clauses”. How much do I owe the school if i leave? Do not get caught not knowing before it’s too late!
