Every year, thousands (like lots of thousands!) of athletes enter the transfer portal hoping for a better fit, a bigger role, or a clearer path forward. But what often gets overlooked is that the portal isn’t just a roster decision. It’s a career decision.
If the student athlete is considering transferring, a few things you might want to consider:
Scholarship/NIL agreement – what does your “scholarship/NIL agreement” say? What are the terms of the contract? Buyout clause? Usage rights? The enforceability of these contracts are questionable, but these contracts are very important so you should understand the language of your agreement.
3rd party NIL deals – what happens when you have a brand deal and you transfer to another school mid deal? Does the deal still stand? Did you breach the contract? Just something to consider.
Managing expectations — because the portal is competitive, and outcomes aren’t guaranteed. The reality is most athletes go into the portal with high hopes for a better situation, and the grass isn’t always greener. Sorry.
Assessing NIL opportunities — what’s legitimate, what’s sustainable, and what aligns with the athlete’s long‑term goals. Are you just after a pay check?
Too many athletes enter the portal without guidance. Too many rely on rumors, pressure, or emotion. Too many don’t have someone in their corner who understands the business side.
The portal can be complex. The rules confusing. The consequences real. And the window to make the right move is small.
Navigating the transfer portal might require help and athletes deserve advisors who can help them make informed, compliant, long‑term decisions, not short term excitement. Agents should be educators, protectors, and strategic partners.
